Training

Is it possibile companies don’t need to invest in training?

I hear that when money is tight the training budget is one of the first things to fall under the axe.

Equally I know from personal experience that when money isn’t tight, not all successful companies invest much (or should that be spend much?) on training.

So it leads me to ponder – how necessary is training?

Sometimes that’s really easy to answer. If the training is to develop or add a necessary competency (likely a skill) and that competency is clearly defined and needed, either because it is in short supply, or completely absent, then it is highly likely the training will be given.

If however the training is more in to form of development (i.e. trust, what is it, how important is it, how do you recognise it and how do you build it?), then the answer isn’t so cut and dried. Again I will stress during economic good and bad times.

Why?

Is it because one is filling a clear gap that can easily be reconciled on the balance sheet (if we can’t do perform these tasks then we will lose this and potential other future business).

And the other is simply about getting better? We can already do it, or we are managing without it, so why should we bother adding anything else. It looks like cost/effort with no obvious need/benefit.
